It’s like we are on vacation all the time
My City: Fort Lauderdale
Name: Carmen Edelson
Profession: Senior Editor/Publisher
I grew up in New Jersey and fell in love with Fort Lauderdale after spending some time down here vacationing. I didn’t get the travel bug until my early thirties when I went to Europe for the first time. I started traveling and spending lots of time answering people’s questions and showing them our pictures. That’s the origin of how I started my travel blog. Whether I’m with my family, my girlfriends, my husband, I really enjoy visiting places that I’ve never been to before, and getting to know the local culture. I would like to look back at my life one day and say that I experienced a lifelong dream of mine, which was to travel the world.
Where do you live? Fort Lauderdale
Here I grew up: Perth Amboy, New Jersey
Why Fort Lauderdale? It’s like we are on vacation all the time. First of all, there’s the weather. It’s a comfortable warm climate all year round. Then, there’s the palm trees, the beaches, and the endless choices of restaurants.
My first memory: I came to Fort Lauderdale in my early twenties on vacation with friends and fell in love with the city. I’ve always been drawn to the ocean and the palm trees.
How do you find the best places to eat when you travel? I love finding restaurants that are typical of the place that we’re going to. I don’t always want the best or most famous restaurants, I really like ones that are authentic and local and give me a real feel for the way the local live. Of course, it’s not entirely true that I don’t like the best or the famous restaurants.
My favorite place to eat: Ocean2000 is my favorite place to eat in Fort Lauderdale, because it is quiet, intimate, and has an ocean view. The food is fantastic. Address: Ocean2000 Restaurant, 2000 N Ocean Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305
What do you eat there? For dinner, I usually order the Florida Yellowtail Snapper a la Pancha. It’s delicious. Lunch time I order the mozzarella and tomato salad.
Typical local food? We get a lot of fresh fish such as snapper and pompano. We are most famous for lobster, stone crabs, and key lime pie.
Meet the locals: I can’t think of one simple place, because everywhere you go in Fort Lauderdale you’re bound to meet the locals.
My favorite bar: Kaluz is on the Intracoastal Waterways with an outdoor seating area and bar. It’s where many locals go for drinks and appetizers while enjoying the water views. Kaluz Restaurant, 3300 E Commercial Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308
Best for a first date? If you want to impress someone on a first date, Ocean2000 is the best place to go.
My secret place: Secret Garden Restaurant at The Pillars Hotel. You can have a romantic dinner right on the dock looking out into the intracoastal waterways.
My best advice: The best time to visit Fort Lauderdale is between September and April.
My favorite shop: The Galleria Mall in Fort Lauderdale has a lot of great shops, and designer stores. My favorite shop has to be the Louis Vuitton store located inside Neiman Marcus.
My favorite Event: Fort Lauderdale is known as the yachting capital of the world. Every year the first week of November we host the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. It’s a fun event to tour some of the mega yachts that are up for sell.
Taxi or other local transport? Either taxi or rent a car to get around town.
Keep away of: Spring break (March-April). The beach area is full with college students and families on vacation. Most of the hotels are booked and it’s hard to find a restaurant that isn’t packed.
Why do you travel? I really enjoy visiting places that I’ve never been to before, I hadn’t done much international travel until a decade ago and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the Caribbean and Europe. And there’s so much of the world that I still want to see.
Where next: I’m off to Spain next. I’ll visit Barcelona, Costa Brava, Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and Madrid.
