Meet Laura and get her guide to Fuengirola

My City: Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, Spain
My name: Laura Martin Castro
Born: 1990
Profession: Manager

FUENGIROLA, SPAIN: Normally you meet Laura, the local chica at a very busy corner and a tapas restaurant in the centre of Fuengirola. The town is located at the seaside 25km west of Malaga International Airport and for long has been one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Sol.  Easily accessible by road, rail or bus, it is not difficult to see why this buzzing town on the Mediterranean is a choice for so many.Laura Martin Castro is a single mother for her daughter Carla, three-year-old. Here is her exclusive guide to the home-city and the joys of living here.

What best with Fuengirola? The sun and living next to the beach. It´s always a party or festival here. Feira de Fuengirola is my favourite, seven days’ fiesta non-stop – start always October 6th. Music, people dressed in national costume, and a festival for families. As a city, Fuengirola lives all year around.

Where do you work? I am the manager at Tuto Tapas. Try our smoked salmon tapas as well as the typical Malaga salad. Address: Paseo Jesús Santos Rein, 1, Fuengirola

My favourite place to eat? Try Restaurante Las Tablas Del Rey for meat and wine. Address: Paseo Maritimo Rey de Espana, located next to the sea

What do you eat there? I love meat and normally I order chateaubriand served on a bed of roasted potatoes surrounded by green peppers.

Typical local food? Tapas. I suggest meatballs in pepper sauce, warm salad with goat cheese. Ensalada Templada, jamon, queso, ruccola, vinaigrette, cherry and basil. Petit Chef is Foie gras of goose Escalopin de foie, blue cheese and apple.

Best meal you´ve had? Spanish omelette served by my father, Paco Martin. Strange enough, my mother don´t make food.

Meet the locals: In the city centre

My favourite bar: Heaven´s Gate – bar and disco with great atmosphere. This one is open until 7am in the weekend

Best place for a first date? I suggest Castillo Sohail, a castle become the symbol of our city. The fortress is surrounded by square towers and every part of it has been restored. At the moment I’m single and looking forward to go there for a date.

My best advice: Visit our beaches, Bio Parque, The Castillo and the city.  Fuengirola stretches 7km and only 1,5km wide, here you can walk the city. Plaza de los Chinorros is a small square with lot of crowds in the evening. Arrive early to get a table at the cafes.

My favourite shop: Zara Woman has two shops, one in Miramar Shopping Mall and the other located in the main street.

My favourite Event: Feira de Fuengirola, a city festival taking place in October.

Keep away of: Like any other place, look out for pick pockets and handbag snatchers.
