A family-resort in Germany – next to the Baltic Sea

I was surprised by all the activities, restaurants and alternatives to stay

HOLSTEIN, NORTH GERMANY: In any new country there is always something to be learned from the very beginning. Arriving the huge holiday resort Weissenhäuser Strand, I was met with two new and important words: Moin Moin! This is how they say Hello and Good Morning in this part of Germany. Literally it means Schönen Morgen or beautiful morning.

The first view of Weissenhäuser Strand, you will be surprised by all the various accommodation options spread across the complex, surprised by all the activities available, restaurants and the sand dunes next to the Baltic Sea. Most likely, this is the main reasons people chose German´s largest family-resort and water playground for children located in Holstein, North Germany. I felt like I arriving a mid-sized town of its own.

Weissenhäuser Strand opened in 1973 as a family resort and today they offer so many activities for families you at least need one week to enjoy them all. This is the place Germans meet the Baltic Sea´s sandy beaches, a bathing pier and relax in basket chairs on the beach – or find the joy of summer by hiking, playing golf, exciting water sports or simply enjoy excellent food served at nine restaurants.

From bed to foot-golf. With 1100 houses and apartments offering more than 4.000 beds and a strand hotel with 181 rooms, there is something for everyone to choose where to stay. However, the most impressing is the variety of activities. From the Jungel-land, a sub-tropic pool-area, indoor climbing and bowling to real action on the nearby lake visiting the aqua-sport centre WaWaCo. Foot-golf is the new attraction, a mix of golf and football, taking place on an 18-hole course. The goal is to do the lanes in as few kicks as possible.

Festivals. During my visit, The Latin Dance Camp took place in different halls and a huge festival-tent. It was dance, music and fitness workshops from morning to the evening. Weissenhäuser Strand is a centre for different festivals throughout the year – from a Lesbian weekend to Heavy Metal Festival.

Food. I really enjoyed the variety of food served at the restaurant in the four-star Strandhotel. But here is something for all tastes, from pizza and pasta to more cross-over style.
”We serve basic German style, but also traditional food from the region of Holstein, and we try to put effort on food produced in every season of the year. Fish and seafood is important”, Malte Otten says. He is Food & Beverage Director and proud to serve exclusive and local produced beer. An Asian restaurant will soon be open.

My favourite. Sabrina Ollmann works at Weissenhäuser Strand and here is her statement about the resort: ”It`s open all year, we have many indoor activities and all are included in the price. This is like a small town located next to the nature and the sea. My favourites are the wellness- and fitness centre”.

German Etiquette. As we are aware of “Moin Moin”, it is still important to realise that northing´s as easy as sticking your foot in it when you are abroad. But don´t worry, Germans on holiday in their own country are lovely people and they like to shake hands both when arriving and when departing, and in a group they shake hands with every single individual. And saying “Auf Wiedersehen” when leaving, is as important as ”Moin Moin”.

Make it Happen!

Touch Down: The holiday resort Weissenhäuser Strand is located one-hour drive by car from Kiel and the Hanseatic city of Lübeck is about 70 km away. The train will almost bring you directly to the resort. The local rail station (Oldenburg in Holstein) is located only 6km away.

Stay: Stay in a holiday apartment, a flat, a penthouse or in the four-star beachfront hotel

Eat: Burgers, snacks, coffee and more at The Bistro. This is only one of nine restaurants, pubs and two bars at the resort. "Möwenbräu" is the buffet-style restaurant and Osteria is a culinary journey through Italy and the Mediterranean. For the young ones, at "Jungle Restaurant" they serve steak and salad – and the place apes dance to the beats of the jungle band.

Play: Join in for a Rolling Stone weekend in November and 30 pop-concerts, or the Metal Hammer Paradise including 20 live gigs. You won´t be alone as 4,500 metal-heads are expected.

Mini Guide: Visit Weissenhaus Castle, which gave its name to the holiday resort The Hansa-Park amusement park is about 40km from Weissenhäuser Strand.
