Meet the Rock-Mayor: “We take care of our visitors”
Benalmadena, Spain: La Paloma Park is a gorgeous location in the center with a stunning array of flora and fauna, plus animals. The coast is home to the majority of attractions, included golden sandy beaches. This city of the province of Malaga consisting of three main urban areas; idyllic Benalmadena Pueblo, Benalmadena Coast and Arroyo de la Miel.
“We are not as well-known as our neighbours, but we love to take care of our visitors and we have a lot to offer”, the mayor Victor Navas says. We met the popular mayor at his office in the Pueblo, a village set back from the coast on the foot of Mount Calamarro.
The heart of the original village has a traditional Spanish style with whitewashed stone buildings and alleys. Cafés and restaurants provide fine dining in squares and views of the coast.
Locals and tourists. Benalmadena is located between more famous Torremolinos and Fuengirola, not far from the airport. The city of Malaga is about 12km to the west with Marbella 52km to the east. Tourism is the main business with many foreigners who live here all year round.
“This is a city with several smaller villages and a mix of locals and tourists, most locals. Benalmadena is not a tourist machine and we have focus on quality tourism”, Navas says. The Mayor is musician and front man in a local rock band.
Arroyo de la Miel. This former sleepy village, with a name translated to “Honey Stream”, links the Pueblo to its coast and has grown into an area to eat and shopping, and one of the most blooming tourist areas of the Costa del Sol.
The train station is found in Arroyo, which links the town all along the coast from Malaga to Fuengirola.
Places to visit. A promenade stretches along the coast to Puerto Marina, which boasts shopping and dining. The marina is also home to The Sea Life Centre, home to all manners of marine wild life. You can take a stroll around to look at the floating hotels and millionaire’s yachts and when the sun goes down the Puerto Marina becomes one of the coasts best party destinations.
Tivoli World Amusement Park is located in Arroyo de la Miel, a world of entertainment for all tasters and ages. The only one on the Costa del Sol.
Casa de la Cultura in Benalmadena is the place where the vast majority of the cultural events and exhibitions are held. This culture house is located on Avenida de la Constitucion, next to Plaza de la Mezquita.
Spa complex: Renova Thermal is a spa complex located in the Sensara residential estate, surrounded by gardens and with pool, sauna, Turkish bath and an array of massages, beauty therapies and treatments.
Sports: Here you can practice any outdoor sport all year round and you will find fully equipped sports facilities at the sports centres. At Club de Raqueta you can play tennis and the popular paddle tennis and Bil Bil House Golf is the place for playing golf.
The mountains. The highest point visiting Benalmadena is El Castillejo (972m), a viewpoint over a lovely mountain area with wild goats living on rough rocks. Teleferico Benalmadena provides a spectacular trip from Arroyo to the peak of Mount Calamorro.
Conclusion. Benalmadena´s charisma is shaped by its unique landscape, between the sea, the mountains and the Pueblo, a place to jump into the warm Mediterranean waters. With the international airport ten minutes drive away, Benalmadena has quick and easy access to any point in Europe and the world.
Make it Happen!
Touch Down: Trains run every 30 minutes between Malaga city centre and Fuengirola, stopping at Malaga Airport, Torremolinos, Benalmadena (Arroyo de la Miel) and several smaller stops. Local bus services are especially cheap.
Stay: Hotel Mac Puerto Marina has an amazing location and one of the best hotels in Benalmadena.
Eat: The cuisine is wide and varied with restaurants offering food typical of the area, with lots of seafood. There are a great number of tapas bars. Some traditional bars will often give you a small amount of tapas for free with a caña (small beer). Benalmadena Costa's situation by the seaside affords it the pleasure of being home to Chiringuitos (beach bars).
Play: For a chilled evening, there's always the table-for-two option at the quayside restaurants. In the weekends Puerto Marina is the best place to squeeze every last drop of the weekends. This is where Romeos in the know take their Juliets.
Mini Guide: The Buddhist Enlightenment Stupa has its residence in Benalmadena Pueblo; it is the largest Stupa in the Western world standing 33 metres tall and is a point of interest for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Climate: Benalmadena enjoys hot summers and warm winters. Cooling breezes from the sea make the summer heat manageable, temperatures are an average of 32 ºC in summer.
